Weight loss surgery

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is a procedure performed on people who are obese, with the aim of reducing their weight. These surgeries work by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold, causing malabsorption of nutrients, or by a combination of both gastric restriction and malabsorption. Here are some of the most common types of weight loss surgeries:

1. Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass):

   - This is one of the most common methods.

   - The stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a larger lower pouch, and then the small intestine is rearranged to connect to both.

   - It restricts the amount of food that can be consumed and reduces the absorption of nutrients.

2.Gastric Sleeve

   - A large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a banana-shaped section that is closed with staples.

   - This procedure restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold.

3. Gastric bypass

   - A band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch to hold food.

   - The size of the opening from the pouch to the rest of the stomach can be adjusted by filling the band with saline solution.

   - This procedure restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold.

4.Gastric Baloon

   - A deflated balloon is placed in the stomach and then filled with saline solution.

   - This procedure restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold.

If the desired result is not achieved, there are 2 types of medical treatments to choose:

-Weight Loss Surgery: Gastric Sleeve, Gastric Bypass

-Non Surgical Weight Loss Treatments: Gastric Balloon, Stomach Botox, Gastric Band

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Generally, candidates for weight loss surgery have a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 35. If your BMI is between 30 and 35, you might qualify if you also have an obesity-related condition such as sleep apnea, heart disease, or high blood pressure.

  • The types of bariatric surgeries include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. Each type of surgery has different implications and success rates. The choice of surgery depends on various factors including your health condition and weight loss goals. It's important to discuss the pros and cons of each procedure with your doctor to determine the best option for you.

  • Like any surgical procedure, weight loss surgery carries risks. These may include complications from general anesthesia, bleeding, infection, pneumonia, blood clots, hernias, blockage or obstruction, leakage from the stomach or intestines, and in rare cases, pulmonary, cardiac, or renal failure. The risk of complications varies with the type of surgery.

  • Recovery times can vary depending on the type of surgery. Most patients spend about two nights in the hospital and can return to work in about two weeks, although this may vary based on individual health conditions and the nature of your work. Your diet will be restricted initially, gradually returning to regular foods while focusing on a healthy diet to maintain weight loss.

  • Regular follow-ups with your surgeon, especially in the first two years, are common. Lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet and regular exercise, are crucial for maintaining weight loss. You may also need to take supplements to ensure proper nutrition due to changes in how your body absorbs vitamins and minerals after surgery
