Root Canal Treatment

Purpose: To treat and save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected.

Indications: Deep cavities, trauma, repeated dental procedures, or cracks in the tooth leading to inflammation or infection of the pulp (the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels).

Symptoms that may indicate a need for Root Canal Treatment:

   - Severe tooth pain when chewing

   - Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold

   - Darkening or discoloration of the tooth

   - Swelling and tenderness in surrounding gums

   - Pimple-like abscesses on the gums

Procedure:

1. Diagnosis: An X-ray is taken to check the shape of the root canals and to see if there are signs of infection in the surrounding bone.

2. Local Anesthesia: The tooth is numbed using a local anesthetic to ensure the patient is comfortable.

3. Tooth Isolation: A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva.

4. Access Opening: A hole is drilled into the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.

5. Cleaning & Shaping: The diseased pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped. Special instruments are used to clean out the decayed or infected pulp and to shape the space for filling.

6. Filling the Canals: After cleaning, the root canals are filled with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, and sealed.

7. Restoration: The access hole is sealed with a filling. In many cases, a crown is recommended to restore the tooth's strength and appearance.

Aftercare:

   - Mild discomfort or swelling might be experienced, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

   - It's important to avoid chewing or biting on the treated tooth until it's fully restored.

   - Regular dental check-ups are vital to ensure the treated tooth remains healthy.

Benefits:

   - Retention of the natural tooth

   - Elimination of pain and discomfort

   - Prevention of the spread of infection
